Robert Moran, born in 1857 in New York, moved to Seattle in 1875 and was employed as a steamboat engineer in Puget Sound, British Columbia, and Alaska. Other members of the family followed Moran to Seattle, and in 1882 they opened a small machine shop on Yesler Wharf, expanding into larger quarters on Western Avenue. Robert Moran was born in New York City on January 26, 1857. He came to Seattle in 1875, and as a mechanical engineer, engaged in shipbuilding and marine engineering. With his brothers Frank and Sherman, he established Moran Bros. Marine and Sawmill Machinery Co. in 1882, which later became Moran Bros. Co. (ship and engine builders) in 1890. Shipbuilder and mayor of Seattle, Washington Born 1857 in New York City, Robert Moran served as mayor of Seattle and acquired a large estate on Orcas Island, much of which he donated to be turned into a state park. Moran was mayor from 1888 to 1890, during the great fire that destroyed much of the city. In 1904 he retired to his Rosario estate on Orcas Island.
